If we're not really convinced by the idea of Textured Vegetable Protein as a thing, are there any reasonable substitutes? Can you throw firm tofu at it or something? (I also have some Better Than Bouillon but it's one of the animal varieties, which if I don't mind that presumably should also work in this case…)
Also, electric kettles are probably really good for this.
